Cleaning of teeth
Leaning of the teeth, also called as Scaling and Polishing is a very routine dental procedure. We, at Agarkar’s Orthodontic Centre (AOC), take up all the scaling appointments in a planned and need based manner, depending on the oral hygiene condition and health of the patients. It often takes two, three or four visits to completely clean the teeth and teach the patients to brush effectively!
You cannot be taught to play tennis or golf by reading about them. You must be instructed, and you must practice. Similarly, you should learn the right way of brushing under the strict supervision of your dentist and so this is given an equal importance at our Dental Clinic.
The tooth has five surfaces – front, back, the two sides and the chewing surface. Brush the top and bottom teeth separately. The bristle tips should be applied at 45 degrees to the gum area just above where the teeth emerge and should concentrate on the gum margins (where most people miss). The bristles should be moved back and forth with a gentle circular scrubbing motion and short strokes. Do not forget the teeth right at the back of the mouth and also the inside surface of the teeth. Finally brush all the biting surfaces.
Oral prophylaxis and polishing / teeth cleaning
Dental polishing or more commonly called coronal polishing is performed when Dental cleaning (Scaling) has removed the hardened tartar buildup. The patient is assessed by the dentist to determine whether coronal polishing is necessary. If it is deemed necessary, a coronal polishing will remove any stain build up not emoved by the scaling procedure. The duration of a polishing appointment can vary, depending on the amount of plaque and tartar build up. Commonly, prophylaxis is scheduled for 30 minutes of the dentist’s time.
